Where Has the Excitement Gone? The Drop of the Goal Scoring

Football match action
The Wolves squad have scored a decrease of 10 goals from open-play situations than this point the previous campaign.

One of the biggest stories of the Premier League this campaign has been the reduction of goals scored in open play and how sides have been scoring increasingly from dead-ball situations instead.

When we compare scoring methods to the initial 11 matches the prior season, there have been 39 fewer goals in open-play and 26 more from team set-pieces and penalties, resulting in 13 fewer altogether.

Examining the broader view, efforts on goal clubs are making have seen a remarkable 370 fewer in open-play than at this stage last time out.

Even with the significant rise in set-piece goals, we've actually seen just two more attempts produced from these situations outside of penalties, indicating how effective clubs have been at finding ways to score from dead-ball situations.

Scoring Rates Reveal a Story

Over 300 goals notched in the first 110 fixtures so far works out at nearly 2.75 goals each match, if this persists for all 38 games could be the least for since 2020-21, from five seasons ago (2.69).

But just 196 goals coming in open play translates to 1.78 per game and is on course to be the smallest for since 2009-10, back in 2009-10 (1.76).

That campaign additionally represents the sole English top-flight season to experience scoring more often from set-plays excluding penalties than this season's rate of 0.77 each match (0.79).

Which Sides Are Most Responsible?

When it comes to goals scored from open-play, Wolverhampton Wanderers have experienced by far the biggest decrease, netting only four in 11 matches, 10 less than at this stage the previous campaign.

Outside of Wolverhampton, England's top division's fall in open play goals is very much a London phenomenon, with half of the city's seven teams recording five or more fewer goals from open-play than the previous year.

To be fair, this is primarily due to them netting many scores at the early stages of last season instead of them really struggling to score in open play this campaign.

Conversely Manchester City have experienced the most significant jump, with all but one of their 23 scores so far arriving in open play.

Set-Piece Success

We've compared the promoted teams with those that were relegated they took the place of. Play-off champions the Black Cats have recorded three extra scores in open play than Southampton achieved in their first 11 games en route to the drop the previous campaign.

When it comes to scoring from set-plays (not counting penalties), Arsenal and the Blues have seen the largest rise, with each team making up for the five fewer goals that they've produced in open play with identical figures from dead-ball situations.

Manchester United have scored double the number scores from set-plays as they managed in the 11 games last season prior to the manager assumed control, while Sunderland again are more effective at converting than the fellow red-and-whites they superseded.

City appear not to have received the trend about netting additional goals from set-pieces, because they've recorded a reduction of three than the previous campaign, similar to the Reds, although that might be down to the change in style they're working to install.

Overall Patterns

Six sides – the Gunners, the Blues, Fulham, the Magpies, Tottenham and the Hammers – have been this season's primary examples by netting less goals from open play and increased from set-pieces, while City are the only side to defy the pattern up to now by achieving the contrary.

It will be interesting to see if sides continue to place such emphasis on set-plays as matches continue or if they regain their overall inventiveness and start netting additional scores in open-play too.
