UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl containing multiple personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, each with their own fears and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
