Three Lions Coach Reveals The Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

A decade ago, the England assistant coach was playing at a lower division club. Today, he's dedicated supporting the England manager win the World Cup in 2026. His path from athlete to trainer started through volunteering coaching youngsters. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He realized his destiny.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression is incredible. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he established a name for innovative drills and great man-management. His club career included Chelsea and Bayern Munich, and he held international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the “pinnacle” according to him.

“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a systematic approach so we can to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Passion, especially with the smallest details, defines Barry’s story. Putting in long hours day and night, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their strategies involve player analysis, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. He stresses “Team England” and dislikes phrases such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and they're pushed that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Greedy Coaches

The assistant coach says and Tuchel as highly ambitious. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he declares. “We seek to command the entire field and that's our focus long hours toward. We must not only to stay ahead of changes and to lead and innovate. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We need to execute an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in that period. We need to progress from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To create a system for effective use in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ all the time available after our appointment. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds among them. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, observing them live, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

Barry is preparing on the last two in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. They've already ensured qualification with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; instead. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.

“The manager and I agree that the style of play must reflect everything that is good of English football,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the physicality, the integrity. The England jersey must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape instead of heavy armour.

“To make it light, it's crucial to offer an approach that enables them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They should overthink less and more in doing.

“You can gain psychological edges for managers in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, closing down early. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared currently. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. Our aim is to increase tempo across those 24 metres.”

Drive for Growth

The coach's thirst to get better is all-consuming. While training for his pro license, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, especially as his class contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. For self-improvement, he sought out tough situations imaginable to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton locally, where he coached prisoners during an exercise.

He earned his license as the best in his year, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – got into print. Lampard included impressed and he brought Barry to his team at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the team dismissed nearly all assistants but not Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he got Barry out from Chelsea to rejoin him. The FA view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
