The people of Israel commemorate two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace talks continue
People have gathered around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership postponed formal commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to examine the conditions of the proposal.
A prominent delegate familiar with the negotiations indicated that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.
The representative said the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "tough and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that facilitators are striving to reduce the disparities between the two sides.
Critical Points in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The exchange of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for assistance deliveries
- Post-war management of the territory
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose brother endured the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "No location seems like home now and until every captive are released none of us will be secure."
"Once we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.
Outside the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We must do any agreement needed for the hostages to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."
Research now regularly indicate that about the majority of the population prefer the conflict to end in return for the freedom of the captives.
Gaza Circumstances
At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to remember the victims.
From there, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli bombardment continued.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side district, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the eastern district of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"When the evening comes, the fear comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who places his head on me all night."
"Every second we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the war will come back to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported two more victims had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get aid to the south region, medics stated.
