The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Parent Company Blocked Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
One of the co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated that parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside his partner, announced that he will personally create the controversial flavor as part of a personal series showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders and Parent Company
This latest development deepens the continuing tension between the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders maintain how the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur announced via an Instagram video how he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, that match the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales in disputed territories.
This upcoming product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that was first established several years back for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes and Future Plans
Mr. Cohen stated how he will develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues which the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, following many years of involvement, citing worries regarding how its independence had been undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for its independence so that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
