The Actor's Jesus-Themed Horror Movie Is Less Extreme Than Expected

The acclaimed actor may be the optimal selection for a bold scary movie focused on the biblical figure, but not for the causes certain viewers might assume. Actually, Cage does not actually play the central religious figure in The Carpenter’s Son: his character is referred to merely as a craftsman. Cage is positioned as a father figure of this tale, working to maintain his faith as his son (portrayed by Noah Jupe), his teenage adopted son, starts to exhibit divine powers. The reason it's challenging to picture any other major actor taking this character is that even as the figure grows stricken with multiple trials, Nicolas Cage looks almost moving certain that this dark, bleak small film is deserving of his effort.

The Actor's Current Film Selections

Cage has been spending his time more judiciously recently. He still stars in more films than most average viewers will ever see — for example, did you know that he has made several separate cowboy movies in the past three years? — yet he also mixes in esteemed independent films for example one recent hit, another notable movie, and Longlegs. This new film appears to be one of those, because it’s borderline horror, possibly controversial, and handles a over-the-top premise in a earnest manner.

Movie's Premise and Direction

Sadly, filmmaker Lotfy Nathan does not justify that serious attention. The Carpenter’s Son opens in a compellingly nomadic setting, positioned as inspired by an apocryphal lost gospel regarding the youthful days of the messiah. The Carpenter, The Mother, and the boy relocate constantly, afraid of doctrinal intolerance or doubt regarding their son's strange powers. “Calamity follows us,” Cage mournfully notes. This persists when evil influences focus on the family at their new home, getting a jump-start on that traditional religious challenge for the son.

Sometimes, the movie mirrors an Exorcist-style supernatural thriller, but none of the lead characters are explicitly taken over. Instead, they grow progressively isolated mutually, while these powers infect a nearby girl (the actress, listed as “The Stranger”) who The Boy bonds with, and gives all troubling visions of a dark tomorrow. The Carpenter in particular struggles with his position within the plot, occasionally scolding his child he can’t fully understand.

Debate and Sensitivity

This material is prone to court controversy, and Nathan treats it with a lot of sensitivity — too much, maybe. The notion of a teenage boy confronted with his eventual sacrifice and lured by unknown powers is indeed terrifying, but the filmmaker might be wary of appearing sensational and anxious to signal his intentions, thus he frequently withdraws to darkly ominous visuals. The roles constantly ponder — FKA Twigs, who demonstrated genuine potential in another movie, surprisingly — surrenders her acting to her character's costume, at times punctuated by some disturbing frightening scenes.

Cage's Portrayal and Film's Weaknesses

At the same time, the actor flirts with just the sort of overacting that those who enjoy his campier roles could be expecting. There is a moment (also included) in promotional material where Cage loses control and shouts “My faith has been shattered!” Should such of florid outburst is a component of a Jesus-themed horror movie, maybe a more openly absurd style would be more effective of Cage’s willingness to exaggerate when necessary. On the other hand, The Carpenter’s Son more closely resembles the weaker direct-to-video films Cage made during the 2010s — not the cheesy thrillers but rather the dramas and paranormal movies that typically appear interesting, and usually have some select actor's highlights, but in the end seem like, indeed, low-budget DTV material.

Honestly, several of these, while less ambitious, were more watchable in general. At this point I have to disregard my personal rule, not religious but work-oriented: Previously, a respected mentor convinced me to eliminate descriptive terms like “tedious” or “uninteresting” from my analytical lexicon. These words express scant except a personal and generically described impatience, avoiding the duty of vibrantly communicating the intellectual and feeling of viewing an individual production. It's hard to communicate monotony without appearing dull personally. It's just as unclear as labeling a movie “interesting.” “Elaborate,” in other words.

Yet, I acknowledge, I felt uninterested throughout The Carpenter’s Son. On the positive side, it is a devotional type of boredom, not because The Carpenter’s Son is preachy, but because it demands a kind of dutiful submission to view it. Eventually early on, the movie locks into a repetitive rhythm of simmering anguish, and does not
