Outrage Surges as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Criticism
Individuals from across the partisan divide and the Hollywood industry are coming together to denounce former President Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the tragic deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Statement
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood home, Trump took to his platform to label the late director as "tortured and struggling". The post, he asserted Reiner's death was "due to the anger he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Police have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bail was set at a significant amount.
A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.
This is a disgusting and vile statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the remarks. She referenced previous rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just lost it. Now implying the Reiners caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from Within Political Ranks
Some Republican elected officials also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He publicly challenged others in his political party to justify the comments.
Reiner's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation following the killing of another political figure.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" as posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
