New York's next mayor states his intention to live in historic Gracie Mansion
The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, did not confirm his residency plans promptly following his triumph in November.
"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the imperative to directing my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," Mamdani said in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change there, the community will forever remain inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Political Debate
In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing even though he hails from a famous family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for official events, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Grand New Home
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his previous Astoria apartment.
With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the housing expenses rises faster than what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
