New Year Celebrants Urged to Bundle Up with Snow Expected Across the UK
Meteorologists are reporting a chilly beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Go Ahead Despite Forecasts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are planned to proceed, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid advisories for snow in northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," noted the Met Office.
Fireworks Under Open but Cold Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with no rain and clear skies. The mercury are forecast to be low, so extra layers vital, according to forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Extensive Advisories for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- People are advised to allow extra time for trips on the road.
- Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.
The Mercury Set to Plummet Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are expected to affect the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Advisories Issued
At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this signified the weather could to cause major effects across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
