Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD released video stills Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
