Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
