Germany's City Leader Critically Injured in Knife Assault, Authorities Report
A newly-elected municipal leader in Germany's western region has been stabbed and suffered severe wounds close to her residence, authorities state.
Iris Stalzer, 57, is a affiliate of the SPD political group and assumed the mayoral role of the municipality in the North-Rhine Westphalia state in last month.
Local police say a major operation is in progress in the community. Investigators indicate all avenues are being explored, but they are considering a domestic link.
The Chancellor condemned what he called "a heinous act", stating: "We are concerned about the survival of the newly elected mayor, the victim, and wish for complete healing."
The party expressed its members were profoundly stunned by the attack.
Authorities confirm her two children - a daughter, 17, and a teenage boy - contacted emergency services to police at midday local time (11:00 British time).
The minors were later taken away for interviewing and forensic investigation. A reporter at the scene observed a young person entering a police patrol car.
