No professional sports organization promotes competitive balance like the NFL: it defines their identity. But through the first ten matchups in this campaign, this isn’t a league that is equally balanced separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. Turning to the American Football Conference, postseason landscape is thoroughly confusing. The four teams leading their divisions through ten weeks: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (all standing at eight wins) and the Steelers (5-4 record). Consider that carefully. Kansas City isn't there. No Bills inclusion. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. The traditional powers, supported by elite NFL signal-callers, possess either glaring roster weaknesses or have suffered medical setbacks.

Indianapolis Colts

Their quarterback has been brought down on 35 occasions – the second-most in football – with several hits he absorbed on Sunday proved brutal. Over time, those hits add up.

Denver Analysis

The Broncos hold also 8-2, and the perception remains like they're nervously waiting. The Denver signal-caller has performed unevenly, and the offense plodding, with the defense doing all the heavy lifting. Absent adequate signal-calling, the Broncos aren’t scaring playoff opponents. Los Angeles remains nearby in the Western division at 7-2, however, health issues affecting their protection unit will make it tough for extended playoff success.

Steelers Examination

Then we have the Steelers, surprisingly atop their division despite being thumped a decisive loss to Los Angeles in the evening game. They've been outscored overall, their defense too often disappears, with their quarterback's restrictions during his career phase regularly manifest. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, however, the Ravens, with Lamar Jackson healthy again with manageable games ahead, have won three consecutive. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that Baltimore has closed within a game of the Steelers, though the speed of this shift highlights deficiencies within the Steelers' uneven performances. That the Ravens started with a 1-5 record and currently seem they should win the division reveals much about the complete conference.

Traditional Powers

Baltimore constitutes part within a trio of powerhouses – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, that would continue to generate the highest anxiety in opposing teams should they reach postseason. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, however, both franchises cannot get out of their own way.

Buffalo Bills

Last week, the Bills were riding high after beating the Chiefs. During Sunday's action they experienced among the season's worst defeats this year.
