Can You Crack It? That Overlooked Dutch Invention That Forged our Contemporary Globe
There are many candidates for the title of “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
As per a recent publication, however, that honor should go to the mechanised timber mill invented by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, constructing a modest trading ship required approximately 10 sawyers working over 90 days,” writes the author. “Using wind-powered sawmills, an identical amount of processed timber might be produced in less than a week.”
Thanks to this rapid mechanical cutter, that turned logs into boards with almost no manual labor, the Dutch were able to build ships faster than anyone else, which unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, financial as well as cultural dominance across the continent and the world.
The First True Manufacturing Device
The inventor's sawmill, argues the writer, was “mankind’s initial true factory apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. One component transformed the rotary movement into vertical action for the saw. Another component transformed that same rotary motion into a sideway’s motion feeding the log toward the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the log ahead one precise increment each cycle.
“Every component was simple by itself. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to combine these parts so they acted in a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting with each descending stroke while advancing on every return stroke. It was an astonishingly intelligent use of fundamental components.”
