A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
