Arrangements for Trump-Putin Meeting Delayed Shortly After Hungarian Capital Talks Suggested

Currently exist "no preparations" for US President President Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has stated.

Recently Trump said he and the Russian president would meet in Budapest soon to examine the war in Ukraine.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" call and that a meeting was not "needed".

The White House withheld any more details on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting during a call with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar suggesting the president had pushed him to relinquish extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

However, on Monday Trump supported a ceasefire proposal supported by Ukraine and European leaders to pause the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Freeze the lines where it stands," he stated.

Russia has frequently resisted against pausing the present battle positions.

Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov commented on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.

Negotiating Stances

The "fundamental issues" of the conflict needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a range of comprehensive conditions that involve the acceptance of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its Western allies.

Zelensky said conversations concerning the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with the US leader last Thursday preceded speculation that the United States was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the Tomahawks issue that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had proven to be a "significant input" in negotiations", he remarked.
