The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect behind some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

His passing follows shortly after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
