Alina Habba has stepped down as the US Attorney for New Jersey. This comes after a court battle that questioned her eligibility to hold the office.
Attorney General's Statement
The nation's top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, accepted her stepping down on Monday. Bondi stated that the judicial decision made it unworkable for the official to effectively run her office.
"But do not mistake compliance for surrender," she wrote. "My fight will now reach across the country."
Judicial Challenge
Habba's exit follows closely on a judicial panel found that she had been acting without proper authority as the federal prosecutor. This ruling is expected to impact scores of legal proceedings in New Jersey.
The court said that a temporary posting that bypassed confirmation by the US Senate violated the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.
Future Role and Reaction
The Attorney General added that Habba will continue working within the Department of Justice as a high-level advisor. Habba plans to pursue additional appeals of the disqualification, in the hope of achieving a reversal.
On a social media platform, she contended that the court "must not second-guess the executive's selection of lawyers tasked with executing the fundamental role of the presidency of criminal prosecution."

Bondi praised the prosecutor's work and said that while she was in charge, the Newark saw a significant drop in crime. Additionally that the city of Camden had its initial homicide-free summer since 1974 with no murders.
Legal Career
Habba, 41, first joined the former president's legal defense in 2021. She went on to acted for the former president in his business records case in 2024, when he was conviction on multiple felony counts of financial record manipulation.
Before assuming the top New Jersey post, Donald Trump had revealed he was selecting her as his presidential counsellor during his second administration, calling the lawyer as "unwavering in her loyalty" and a dedicated fighter for justice.
