A Labour figure calls on party not to dismiss upcoming May elections viewing them as inevitable losses

Labour should not “write off” the May electoral contests anticipating heavy defeats, instead leveraging the upcoming fiscal plan as a way to seize back public focus, Lucy Powell stated amid the contest to be the party’s deputy leadership entered its final period.

With voting among party members under way, Bridget Phillipson, contesting the same role, said if she won she intends to establish an official framework to reflect the views of members and unions to the cabinet at regular intervals.

Removed from her cabinet post in last month’s reshuffle after the departure of Angela Rayner emerging as the frontrunner on an outsider platform, promising to present tough truths to the party leadership when necessary.

Following engagements with party members, Powell said apprehension exists regarding potential effects for Labour from Scottish and Welsh parliamentary races alongside English local councils next May, with Labour predicted to see heavy losses, many to Reform UK.

Powell, who was leader of the Commons until the reshuffle, declared she is “not prepared to write off these crucial electoral contests” as inevitable midterm pushback, advocating for an ambitious fiscal plan as a countermeasure.

“It’s not OK if we are losing capable Labour representatives and councils through no fault of their own, because of the missteps we’ve taken nationally,” she said. “We must redefine our priorities so that more communities don’t wake up to Reform and other councils post-election next May.”

November’s budget should be “an opportunity to mark a break from previous errors, and show the country whose side we are on”, Powell articulated, saying it should lift the two-child limit on benefits and make sure fairer distribution of tax responsibilities.

Speaking on BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Education Secretary Phillipson, indicated she believed the restriction would be abolished.

“I firmly believe that we as a government will do the right thing for children in poverty across the nation,” she said. “We’ve initiated this effort. Further action is needed. I will make that happen.”

Phillipson argued in her capacity as minister she could make sure members’ concerns were heard directly within senior government circles. Through an additional commitment, her campaign stated she would formally solicit views from members and unions every three months for presentation at high levels.

She declared: “Labour’s vitality stems from its membership. That’s why I want to give them a stronger voice in how the government delivers its agenda, with more avenues for our movement to tell us about their priorities.

“Solely with my leadership will member voices resonate distinctly at the cabinet table.”

Online member voting began last Wednesday continuing through October, results following two days after.
